The Route tool uses the public OSRM (Open Source Routing Machine) API to calculate the shortest driving path between two or more waypoints, snapped to the road network.

1. Click Route in the top navigation to activate the tool. The panel will appear above the map.
2. Click on the map to place waypoints — you need at least 2.
3. The route line and total chainage (distance in metres and km) will update automatically with each new waypoint.
4. Click Clear Route to remove all waypoints and start again — the tool stays active so you can begin a new route immediately.
5. Press ESC or click the Route button again to exit the tool and restore normal map interaction.

Only absolute distance is shown — no travel time or ETA is calculated. This is intentional for engineering and chainage use cases.

The public OSRM demo server (router.project-osrm.org) is used. It has no guaranteed uptime SLA. For production use, host your own OSRM instance.

The Measure tool draws a straight-line polyline across the map and shows cumulative distance in real time as you move the cursor.

1. Click Measure in the top navigation to activate.
2. Click on the map to place points — a live tooltip follows your cursor showing the cumulative distance.
3. Double-click to finish the line.
4. Click Clear to reset the line — the tool stays active so you can immediately begin a new measurement.
5. Press ESC or click the Measure button again to exit the tool and restore normal map interaction.

Distances use the Haversine formula (spherical Earth model), which is accurate to within 0.3% for UK distances.

All coordinate pins logged in the session can be exported in four formats via the Export dropdown in the header.

Comma-separated values including Name, OS Grid (10-fig and 6-fig), Easting, Northing, Latitude, and Longitude. Compatible with Excel, QGIS, and ArcGIS.

Same data as CSV, formatted as a styled Excel workbook. Useful for client deliverables and reporting.

GPS Exchange Format. Compatible with Garmin, Trimble, and most field GPS devices and GIS applications.

Keyhole Markup Language. Compatible with Google Earth, Google Maps, and ArcGIS Pro. Pins are exported as Placemark elements.

CivilsRoute utilises a proprietary, client-side spatial rendering engine to process and display complex infrastructure datasets with zero latency.

Contains public sector information licensed under the Open Government Licence v3.0. Datasets are periodically aggregated from National Highways, DEFRA, the Environment Agency, Historic England, and the Department for Transport (Street Manager roadworks). CivilsRoute operates as a visualisation tool; all measurements and boundaries should be verified on-site prior to construction.

Important: this is a live feed, not a full register. It only contains events DfT has sent since CivilsRoute subscribed on 7 October 2026, so works already under way before then appear only once they change status (started, extended, completed). Absence of a pin does not mean there are no roadworks. Coverage grows daily.

Three live layers from the Department for Transport's Street Manager service cover roadworks across every English highway authority, not just National Highways. Permits are permission to carry out works, Activities are on-site activities such as investigations and inspections, and Section 58 restrictions limit new works on recently resurfaced roads. Pins are clustered when zoomed out; click one for the street, status, promoter, authority, dates and whether a temporary traffic regulation order is required. Choose an active region to load that region, or zoom in to load the current map view. Data refreshes every five minutes. Only events received since CivilsRoute subscribed to the feed on 7 October 2026 are shown, so older works may be missing. Contains DfT Street Manager open data under the Open Government Licence v3.0.

When the Crash Data layer is active, a year-filter and a Start Crash Selection button will appear in the left sidebar. Click this button, draw a polygon around a specific junction or route section, and the system will instantly generate a severity breakdown (Fatal / Serious / Slight) for all collisions within that boundary.

National Highways manages the Strategic Road Network (motorways and major A-roads) through seven operational regions — South West, South East, East, East Midlands, West Midlands, North West and North East. Each region is a geographic division responsible for the operation, maintenance and improvement of the SRN within its area, and is the unit CivilsRoute uses to scope its regional datasets (Marker Posts, Crash Data, Structures, Flood Zones, Habitats).

Each region is built up from one or more numbered maintenance areas — the delivery contract units (e.g. Area 6, Area 9, Area 12). The NH Operational Regions overlay draws every region boundary at once, colour-coded, with a permanent label showing the region name and its constituent area number(s).

The overlay also shows London (Area 5) — the M25 and connected network around the capital — as a separate polygon. London is not one of the seven operational regions and is not selectable as an active region elsewhere in CivilsRoute (there is no London-scoped crash, network or structures dataset); it is included here only so the national picture is complete.

Toggle NH Operational Regions in the Layers panel (folder 1). It is a national overview and is not tied to your active region, so it stays on when you switch regions. Click any region for its maintenance-area breakdown.
